100 Years in Minnesota: 1858-1958

Magazine created by Cherokee State Bank celebrating 100 years of statehood, which coincided with 50 years of bankhood.

,

The rich lands of Minnesota were ceded to the white man by the Sioux and Chippewa in 1838. A million people came in less than 50 years to build a great state out of the wilderness.

Modern living puts new demands on banking services. Electronic brains, such as the Minnesota-made equipment below, replace many bookkeepers.

The legends of the forests are about the men who felled trees, drove logs down swollen rivers and battled forest fires.

Diversity is the major characteristic of Minnesota's agriculture. Land values range from $2 an acre to as much as $500 an acre.

The famous flour mills of Minneapolis at St. Anthony Falls, where the historic stone-arch bridge spans the Mississippi.

Only a few hours travel now separate the most inaccessible part of Minnesota from its metropolitan centers.

Taconite is magic iron. It is the backbone of America's steel production.

Tooling up for space ships. Minnesota industry is helping guide man's first serious step toward space travel in 1958.

Business and industry throughout the nation are learning all over again what pioneers of Minnesota knew from the beginning, that the Upper Midwest is most efficiently served from plants and offices located in the North Star Sate.

Minnesota supplies iron and wheat and beef, as well as butter and fats and oils to the East. But its destiny is tied to the West.

More than a million and a half vacationers come to Minnesota each year and now spend over $200 million while they are in the state. But Minnesotans, too, know the pleasures of living next to nature.

A mentally-alert population makes schooling big-business in Minnesota.

Constant research opens secrets that widen man's knowledge of himself.

The pioneers have since gone, but their traits continue to dominate a region in which more than three million people live.

The frontiers that challenge us in the years ahead are far more complicated, far more exciting, and infinitely more interesting than those of the past.

Better than Honeycrisp? Say hello to SweeTango.

As apple season approaches, SweeTango enters the fray as a potential Honeycrisp killer. Both were developed by the U of MN. Is it really better than Honeycrisp? Pepin Heights president Dennis Courtier thinks so. Apparently it's the only apple that holds its own against HC in blind taste tests. You'll have to act fast to get your hands on this new breed - production is limited this season and won't be full scale until the 2010 season.
